British oil giant BP is continuing its efforts to plug the oil in the Gulf of Mexico and the company is hoping that its latest effort to cap the leak will be finished in 3 days.
The new procedure is called "cut and cap" and it was launched Wednesday. The procedure was delayed for half a day when a saw became stuck in a thick pipe on the sea bed. The oil has given President Obama an opportunity to seek Congress over the bill, which would support clean energy. Obama said that the oil leak proved that deep drilling is a risky proposition.
Meanwhile, the oil slick, containing thousands of tar balls, is nearing the beaches of north-west Florida. Federal officials said that the slick is only nine miles from Pensacola, the Florida "panhandle".
Coast Guard officials are also trying to minimize the effect of the spill by shooting chemical dispersants at the oil now leaking out of the new cut, said Coast Guard Admiral Thad Allen. Experts maintained that the oil spill might reach Florida's shores by tomorrow.
Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal has expressed unhappiness over the wait saying, “Every day they wait, every day they make us wait, we're losing our battle to protect our coast.”
