As Facebook draws flak over its privacy controls policy, it's rival Diaspora has raised USD 200,000. Diaspora's massive fund raising has fueled speculation regarding Facebook's declining popularity.
Diaspora has garnered over USD 200,000 through an online fund raising website Kickstarter. The New York students, working on the social networking website, had aimed raising USD 10, 000 from 39 days. However, the team accumulated USD 200,642 from approximately 6,500 donators.
Diaspora’s whopping fund raising comes days after Facebook came under scanner for its controversial privacy settings. The students are incorporating more liberal private settings in the new project.
Overwhelmed by the massive donation, the team now aims to chalk out code for the project’s official launch, which is expected to be made in two months.
Revealing future plans, Max Salzberg, one of Diaspora's founders, stated: “We are going after the idea there are all these centralised services where people are giving up their personal information. We want to put users back in control of what they share."
Diaspora is in its initial stages but has given a good fight to Facebook, especially on privacy control row. Diaspora plans to give users option to customize their privacy settings according to their choice—something which Facebook has struggled to give so far.
