French Open 2010: Four-time French Open winner Justine Henin crashed out of the tournament today after suffering a 2-6 6-1 6-4 defeat at the hands of Samantha Stosur.
This was Henin’s first French Open defeat in six years in the fourth round at Roland Garros. The Belgian, who took an 18-month lay-off, had won three consecutive titles from 2005 to 2007.
On the other hand, Stosur is slowly climbing the ladder of success and the Australian is currently at seventh place in the world ranking. Henin had defeated Stosur earlier this month to win the WTA Tour title in Stuttgart . She started on a positive note today as well, breaking Stosur in the opening game and then winning the first set.
But Stosur came back strongly in the second set, breaking through on her first chance in the second set and took control of the set. The decider was tighter but Stosur broke the crowd favorite to lead 3-2.
The seventh seed broke Henin again in game nine and then served for victory. Stosur showed some nerves when she double faulted on her first match point, but Henin failed to capitalize on the opportunity. Stosur will now clash with world number one Serena Williams in the quarter-finals.
