National Weather service has raised Hurricane Earl to a category four hurricane, warning "catastrophic damage" will occur if it makes landfall as it crosses the Caribbean towards the US.The projected Hurricane Earl path still estimates the hurricane will be brushing the U.S. East Coast this week.Weather Forecasters expect the storm to strengthen before making landfall on the eastern United States.

With sustained dangerous  winds of 135 mph (215 kph) Hurricane Earl path also puts the hurricane close to the southern coast of New England, and by the weekend the hurricane may be affecting the area.

Hurricane Earl formed Sunday and has been battering Caribbean islands including Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands today with winds topping 125 mph, making it a Category 4 storm.

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Fiona formed in the Atlantic Monday with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, the National Hurricane Center said.

Fiona was about 890 miles (1,435 km) east of the Leeward Islands, the center said. Officials also advised that people in the northern Leeward Islands should monitor Fiona's progress, as a tropical storm watch may be issued for part of that area Monday night.
