Intel yesterday unveiled its future plans for the Atom processor line, launching an ultra-thin netbook, which it calls ‘Canoe Lake’ platform.

Canoe Lake is just 14mm thick—world’s slimmest netbook. While discussing its future plans at Computex in Taiwan, Intel highlighted its new Pine Trail Atom dual-core and Oak Trail CPUs. The new hardware, Intel claims, have been especially optimized for netbooks and tablets.

Intel further informed that the new dual-core mobile Atom processors are still in making and expected to be ready before the winters this year. Intel added that its new processor would give more performance.

Elaborating about its Oak Trail CPUs, Intel said that the CPUs would be launched by next year. Intel said that the CPUs were custom made for netbooks and tablets. It also claimed that the CPUs would consume power 50% lesser than the previous ones. It would also support full HD video playback. The CPUs would support all kinds of OS’ including MeeGo, Windows, and Google’s Chrome.

Speaking on the occasion, Acer CEO Gianfranco Lanco said, "Acer will be ready with MeeGo-based mobile devices. MeeGo's open software platform will present our customers with another choice of a friendly, easy-to-use operating system. We are pleased to collaborate with Intel in our continuous drive to provide effortless technologies that empower people at work, home - anytime, anywhere."

The launch of new devices comes in the backdrop of Intel’s assertion that its netbooks were not giving profits. It’s learnt that in spite of costly Core-based CPUs for full notebooks, the market of netbooks have continued to expand worldwide. The rising demand has prompted Intel to come up with new hardware to support computers of this category.
