Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has welcomed Brazil’s mediation in ending the impasse over a U.N.-backed nuclear fuel swap with the Western nations.
The plan was put forward last year and under the plan it was decided that western powers would send nuclear fuel rods to a Tehran reactor in exchange for lower-level enriched uranium from Tehran.
The West is apprehensive that Iran is pursuing its nuclear agenda in order to develop weapons, a claim repeatedly rejected by the Islamic Republic. On its part, Iran has always stressed that its nuclear agenda is only for civilian purposes like generation of electricity.
A statement posted on Ahmadinejad's website lsaid that the Iranian president "announced his agreement in principle" to Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva's mediation proposal.
However, a spokesman for Brazil's Foreign Ministry said that Lula has not made an official offer yet, but added that Brasilia was ready to end the deadlock.
