The launch of Apple’s iPad has opened doors for many tablet devices. In compliance with the touchscreen gadget Samsung has come up with the Galaxy Tab, a tablet computer, based on the operating system Android 2.2. Though the launch date for tablet has not been revealed yet for U.S., the tablet is set to ship in Europe by October.
Samsung officially unveiled the gadget at IFA show in Germany. The price of the Galaxy Tab is yet to be decided, but Samsung declared that the tablet will be sold through operators with monthly plans.
The Galaxy Tab is provided with Web browsers, e-book reader, Wi-Fi facility, Adobe Flash 10.1, Touchwiz 3.0 (software by Samsung) and Social Hub, an application developed by Samsung that compiles and shows messages from various social sites in one place. The Wi-Fi and internet facilities can only be entertained with High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) up to 7.2M bps (download) or 5.76M bps (upload).
According to Samsung it is a 7-inch touchscreen device with a resolution of 1024 by 600 pixels. It has 1 GHz Cortex processor with 16GB of integrated storage. With MicroSD card the device can expand its storage capacity up to 32GB. It weighs only at the range of 380 grams.
The tablet also enables users to make phone calls, read newspapers and watch movies in diverse formats like DivX, Xvid, WMV and MPEG-4. This feature will be available only in U.S. where the gadget will be installed with two other softwares namely Layar and Swype.
The other features that are assured to lure users are: the touchscreen is based on TFT; it is also facilitated with 1.3-megapixel camera in front, for making video calls or conferencing. It consists of 3-megapixel camera with LED lamp on its back. Samsung claimed that the battery gives a back up of eight hours.
In contrast to Apple’s iPad, Samsung’s Galaxy Tab is endowed with two advantages: firstly it has low weight than the iPad and secondly the proud owners of the tablet can make phone calls.
Samsung further plans to launch a family line for this product with varying price and sizes. Samsung foresee Gingerbread update, an advanced version of Android, in Galaxy Tab.
