Japanese electronics giant Sony Corp. has announced that it will slash the price of its PlayStation Portable Go videogame system in Japan by 37% in order to boost demand for the handheld device which has recorded some slump in its sales recently. Sony has announced a cut of 16,800 yen ($208) for the PSP Go.

The reduction in price comes more than a week after the price of the device was lowered in the U.S. by $50 to $199.

The new handheld system hit the market last year and at that time Sony had hailed it as a step forward in portable gaming. Sony did away with the packaged media in PSP Go and it played only videogames and movies which were downloaded to the device.

It is to be noted that the price of the machine released by Sony was higher than the existing PlayStation Portable models and the overall PSP sales started to slow down mainly due to the growing interest of the people in playing simple games on advanced mobile phones. Sony is targeting to sell 8 million PSP units including the PSP Go in the current fiscal year to March next year. The company sold 9.9 million units in the last fiscal year.

Referring to the price rise, Sony said in a statement that the price cuts in Japan and the U.S. are part of a regular process of lowering prices for its game machines but the company did not say anything about possible reduction in price for the European market.
