U2 have canceled their participation in the Glastonbury Festival and called off their US tour after the group’s lead singer Bono had emergency surgery for curing possible paralysis.

The 50-year-old crooner was operated last week after suffering a back injury while training in preparation for the tour. Neurosurgeon Joerg Tonn said, "The surgery was the only course of treatment for full recovery and to avoid further paralysis."

Bono will need at least two months to recuperate. The singer said that he was "heartbroken". The group was due to perform at Glastonbury on 25 June. Prof Tonn told the Reuters news agency Bono had been "in severe pain with partial paralysis of the lower leg".

He added that the celebrated singer is "now much better with complete recovery of his motor-deficit. His prognosis is excellent but to obtain a sustainable result he must now enter a period of rehabilitation."
